The MGate MB3170 and MB3270 are 1 and 2-port Modbus gateways. They convert between Modbus TCP, ASCII, and RTU communications protocols. These gateways provide both serial-to-Ethernet communication and serial (master) to serial (slave) communications. They also support simultaneously connecting serial and Ethernet masters with serial Modbus devices.
Up to 32 TCP master/clients can access the MGate MB3170 and MB3270 Series gateways. Alternatively, the gateways can connect to up to 32 TCP slave/servers. You can control routing through the serial ports by IP address, TCP port number, or ID mapping. Serial-port routing by TCP port and IP address allows access for up to 4 TCP clients/masters on MB3270 models. Routing by ID mapping allows access for up to 32 TCP clients/masters on both MB3170 and MB3270 models.
A priority control function allows urgent commands to obtain an immediate response. All models are rugged and DIN-rail mountable. They offer optional built-in optical isolation for serial signals.
The MB3270 integrates Modbus TCP with Modbus RTU/ASCII without modifications. You don’t need to alter the existing Modbus RTU/ASCII architecture or software. The serial redirector function enables a serial master to maintain direct access to serial slave devices. It does this through a specially mapped serial port. This allows serial and TCP masters to access serial slaves simultaneously.
The MGate MB3170 Series includes 100BaseFX fiber models. Multi-mode models support transmission distances up to 4 km. Single-mode models support distances up to 40 km. Optical fiber suits industrial applications perfectly. It remains immune to electromagnetic noise and interference. Fiber provides the best isolation protection for environments with high ground loop voltages. Optical fiber is also safer than copper wire in hazardous environments because it eliminates sparking danger.
Moxa’s Auto-Device Routing function eliminates many configuration problems. Engineers no longer face the inconveniences of configuring large numbers of Modbus devices manually. A single mouse click sets up a slave ID routing table. The same click configures Modbus gateways to automatically detect Modbus requests from SCADA systems. The Auto-Device Routing function removes the need for manual slave ID routing table creation. This saves engineers significant time and cost.
Modbus networks create longer lag times as they increase in size and complexity. The delay between commands and responses becomes a major concern. Advanced MB3000 Series models provide a priority control function for urgent commands. Users can force certain commands to receive an immediate response. Different methods are available to define which commands receive priority. You can choose the method that best fits your system’s requirements.

| Note: When connecting a single-mode fiber transceiver, we recommend using an attenuator to prevent damage caused by excessive optical power. Note: Compute the “typical distance” of a specific fiber transceiver as follows: Link budget (dB) > dispersion penalty (dB) + total link loss (dB). |
